Rebekah Russell is a trauma informed naturopath, wellness program creator and facilitator, and has worked as a Blackmores Advisory naturopath for over a decade. She is also an ex- theology student who worked on farms in both Australia and the Netherlands! And more recently studied with Zenith Virago exploring ways to enhance the quality and depth of our living experience by exploring death as the natural and sacred end of our lives.
Rebekah created her first wellbeing program in 2016 as a response to the mental health crisis facing the local veteran population and began research into how complementary therapies can support those experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and ultimately how a holistic healing approach supports resilience and personal growth.
The Wellbeing programs provided a framework using the pillars of holistic wellbeing: nutrition, mindset, sleep, movement, mindfulness, community and the environment- with a specific focus on evidence-based complementary therapies that have been studied in the treatment of PTSD. Rebekah has also been part of the Northern Beaches Art for Wellness workshops and assisted with running training sessions for local professionals.
Being trauma informed or trauma aware is a recognition that that most of the population have been affected by trauma and having the compassionate understanding that many behaviours and symptoms are the result of adverse life events. It is asking the question “what happened to you?”, rather than asking “What is wrong with you?”
Trauma aware principles include creating a felt sense of safety, establishing trustworthiness, ensuring choice and collaboration, engendering hope, empowerment and modelling respect for all expressions of diversity.
