Minimalism Game cuts down stress

Professional organizers who are employed to help out in cluttered homes and offices say their clients use the same words, over and over, to describe their reaction to the mess: their energy is drained, they can’t find things, and it’s beginning to interfere with their life, feeling overwhelmed, becoming less productive, sometimes feeling desperate, and suffocated. Clutter can be bad for you physically and mentally. But tossing out ‘stuff’ can create anxiety and stress: will I regret the decision, was I keeping “that” for something or someone, a decision I may have forgotten…
(extracted and revised from http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/features/clutter-control)

Last month one of my colleagues completed a whole month of what she called the 30-Day Minimalism Game. I thought I would join her but, after just 2 days I realised that it was difficult and something that I need to plan in advance. And maybe 14 days is long enough to make an impact in my home.

Here’s how it works…
You need at least one partner to join you – someone who’s willing to get rid of their excess stuff. Each person must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash.

Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day.

“It’s an easy game at first. However, it starts getting challenging by week two when you are jettisoning more than a dozen items each day. Whoever can keep it going the longest wins; you both win if you can make it all month. Bonus points if we play with more than two people.”

So who is up for the challenge and wants to play with me? We would need to post photos, (as evidence and to keep it entertaining) this could be done within the newly formed Soothing Sessions private FaceBook group or somewhere else.

I’ll promote this on the Tranquillo Place Facebook wall and see if we can make a team!
